SÕLCON : ANIMATION DEMO
SÕL-CON: The Brown, Black, & Indigenous Comics Expo seeks to celebrate current creative minds as a means to open doors for youth of color to learn how to express their stories through the comic book storytelling arts. The curator reached out to Essence Cartoon to create a five to ten minute animation demo and I was selected to complete this demo.
The curator wanted to give creative freedom to the demo spotlights they have in the expo. With this in mind, I wanted to pull in aspects of SÕL-CON’s key practices of community, inclusiveness, and creativity. G
THE PROCESS
Given the demo duration of 5 - 10 minutes and the scope of time I was given to complete this (one week), I decided to focus on the community aspect of the expo and animate a small group of characters in an overall static scene.
To push the sense of community I included characters of different ages, both male and female, and apply a relaxed, happy overall style. I have the character’s posed on the text “SÕL-CON” to drive the idea of the support and strength of this community.
FINAL DEMO
The full demo came out to be 8 minutes long, showing the time-lapse process of the animation and final review of the animation. All animation was completed in TVPaint with some post-production effects completed in Premiere Pro.
